We of the left spend a lot of time and energy attempting to point out that in the so-called War on Terror, Muslims are not our adversaries and Islam per se is not the problem.

The one place that some of us meet up with conservatives (who are our adversaries, and whose ideology is the problem) is the idea that some sort of democratic government would be ultimately beneficial for the people of the Muslim world. We just differ on the question of whether invading their countries on false pretenses and occupying them is a legitimate or effective means to that end.

In Iran this week they're spending a lot of time and energy making our lives harder. These people even make flag-burning look bad.

Iran to take revenge on Denmark with Holocaust cartoons

(Pravda) Iran has reacted to Denmark’s publishing of the cartoons in turn. The largest state newspaper Hamshahiri which holds conservative views has announced that it will hold a competition to find the most amusing cartoon based on the theme of the Holocaust.

I'm linking to Pravda out of the sheer ridiculousness of it all.

Let me be clear: This doesn't change a thing. Muslims are not the adversary and Islam is not the problem, any more than Pat Robertson's utter nonsense makes Christians our enemy. This week is just frustrating -- have you ever had a friend whom everyone keeps calling an asshole, and whom you keep defending...while they keep on being a bigger and bigger asshole?
