Big Brass Alliance update: Erudite discourseYesterday, we announced that Marching Orders is joining the
Big Brass Alliance, a group of progressive bloggers who are spreading the word
about After Downing Street.
The group, named after a British memo recently brought to light, is advocating an investigation into impeachable offenses allegedly committed by George W. Bush in the run-up to the Iraq war. So far, so good: In addition to drawing attention
around the blogosphere, the issue made it into the mainstream media via CNN's
"Inside the Blogs" (video link here).
In parallel (i.e., not coordinated in any way with After Downing Street to the best of my knowledge), megalomaniac/spoiler Ralph Nader pulled himself out of irrelevancy to end up on the right side of at least one issue: The 'I'-Word (Boston Globe) The president and vice president have artfully dodged the central question: ''Did the administration mislead us into war by manipulating and misstating intelligence concerning weapons of mass destruction and alleged ties to Al Qaeda, suppressing contrary intelligence, and deliberately exaggerating the danger a contained, weakened Iraq posed to the United States and its neighbors?" I mention this less for the pleasure of quoting Nader than to lead into a hilarious forum "debate" in the perineum of the internet, Fark.com , e.g.: Teekno: He's the president. All presidents have been eligible for impeachment. That eligibility ends when they leave office. The discussion is both funny and instructive. I think it's likely quite reflective of the way the debate on the subject will proceed in the country as a whole: a series of sniping one-liners, cast against the backdrop of a Congress controlled by the president's party, a Congress that wouldn't impeach the President if they caught him with a shovel leaving a fresh grave. More elsewhere among the blogs of the Big Brass Alliance: • Alternate Brain also believes that the GOP-controlled Congress would never impeach, and also takes certain über-bloggers to task for not making more noise about this) • Big Brass Blog and Shakespeare's Sister (the organizers) have questions for Rumsfeld • Night Light is also keeping the faith.
