The State of the Union, 2006

I figured it was about time for my annual blog entry, and look what shows up in my inbox -- a nearly perfect screed from a friend of mine whose vitriol rivals that of the Rude Pundit. Because his corporate livelihood might well be endangered by expression of liberal views, I must choose for him a pseudonym. With a nod to our shared Indian heritage, I will call him the Rude Pandit.

Is a traitor still a traitor if he has a corner office?

Apparently we're not the only ones who think that the prospects are slim that real harm will come to Karl Rove as a result of his involvement in the Plame affair.

Excuse me? Pardon me?

Assuming the worst case for "Hot Karl" Rove (i.e., the White House gets pinned down on the particulars, and Rove is accused of treason), he would still have a way out: A presidential pardon.

Downing Street Memo...now in cartoons

You know an issue has made the big time when it's getting covered by political cartoonists. (I'm quite serious: if something isn't in the public consciousness, there's no way that the massive conceptual compression involved in creating a single-image joke can possibly work effectively...Cartooning about an issue tells us that it's becoming part of the zeitgeist.)

Apparently, the Downing Street Memo now qualifies.

Downing Street Memo update

I've been somewhat remiss as a member of the Big Brass Alliance (a network of bloggers promoting awareness of the Downing Street Memo). Since my initial post announcing that Marching Orders was joining the organization, and an update last week, I've been pretty silent. California politics have been heating up, after all...

Big Brass Alliance update: Erudite discourse

Yesterday, we announced that Marching Orders is joining the Big Brass Alliance, a group of progressive bloggers who are spreading the word about After Downing Street.

The group, named after a British memo recently brought to light, is advocating an investigation into impeachable offenses allegedly committed by George W. Bush in the run-up to the Iraq war.

Strange bedfellows

A major stop on Governor Schwarzenegger's out-of-state fundraising tour was in Florida, where Governor Jeb Bush raised money for Arnold's ballot initiatives here in California.

Now Florida Democrats are making an excellent point: If Jeb supports redistricting in California, why not in his own state?

While I'm still confused about the Bush dynasty's plans for Jeb, I'm absolutely certain that I will mind my p's and q's the next time I'm in Florida.

Apparently, Floridians can now kill in self-defense without first making an effort to escape a dangerous situation.

Bill, George, Jeb

Does Bill Frist's behavior surrounding the filibuster issue give us any information about the 2008 race for the GOP presidential nomination?

In particular, does it tell us anything about whether Jeb Bush is truly out of the running?

(Dis-)proportional representation II

I was just wondering below whether, given that the number of people represented by Democratic and Republican is so different in the US Senate, small irregularities in apportionment or districting also resulted in a bias in the House.

The short answer is: It doesn't. I'm glad I checked, but there's no big surprise here.

(Dis-)proportional representation

An interesting point raised by Chuck over at To Be Determined (via firedoglake):
The 44 Democrat senators represent about 3.5 million more people than the 55 Republican senators do.

By my calculations, this means each Democrat represents around 3.4 million people and each Republican represents around 2.7 million. On a souls per seat basis, it's a significant difference.
