Governor fires his first shot...in defense of Prop 13

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, apparently unsatisfied with the issues his cronies spent millions putting on the ballot, is hitting the campaign trail to speak out against changing a law that no one has suggested changing.

Governor shifts ground in initiative fight
Angry Democrats say he's trying to scare voters to the polls
(San Francisco Chronicle) Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's special election campaign suddenly became all about the landmark Proposition 13 property tax initiative Tuesday when he warned elderly homeowners they could lose their houses to taxes if Democrats and union leaders got their way in the fall.

"They want to back us into a corner so eventually they can force us to raise taxes," Schwarzenegger told about 25 people in a back yard get-together at this town outside San Diego.

He accused Democratic legislators of sneaking around with backdoor efforts to "tweak" Prop. 13, the 1978 initiative that put tight caps on property taxes in the state.

"I tell them: 'Don't you dare touch Proposition 13, because the people of California voted to protect their homes," Schwarzenegger said. He talked about knowing people in the 1970s who had to sell their homes "because the government robbed them blind" with property taxes.

Awesome. The Governor was so concerned about Prop 13 that none of the three ballot measures he sponsored have anything to do with property taxes. Teacher tenure? Sure. Budget balancing? Sure (not that he's done anything about it in his first 18 months in office). Redistricting? Hell yes. But property taxes? Absolutely nothing.

It seems like GOP electoral initiatives always have a lie somewhere near the core: gay rights hurt straight marriages; immigrants hurt the economy; unions steal their members money for political action that their members oppose. Now we know what Schwarzenegger's lie will be for this election.

I must admit that I'm a little confused, though. I thought it was going to be a "phenomenon of anger", not a "phenomenon of fear based on a lie." Guess I'd better do a more careful job of keeping up with the news.
