Arnold praises "minutemen"

Last week, Schwarzenegger was calling for the borders to be "closed" (rapidly amended to "secured").

This week, he's praising a group of private citizens that patrols the borders -- an organization that even W has denounced as "vigilantes."

Could it be any more clear that Arnold is courting the far right?

Gov. Praises 'Minuteman' Campaign
(LA Times) Calling the nation's borders dangerously porous, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday praised the private "Minuteman" campaign that uses armed volunteers to stop illegal immigrants from crossing into the U.S.

Schwarzenegger said in a radio interview that the federal government is failing to secure the border with Mexico, and he cast the hundreds of private citizens who have been patrolling the Arizona-Mexico border since April 1 as a popular response to government inaction.

"I think they've done a terrific job," Schwarzenegger said of the "Minuteman" volunteers, who plan to expand to California in June. "They've cut down the crossing of illegal immigrants a huge percentage. So it just shows that it works when you go and make an effort and when you work hard. It's a doable thing."

One question I have after reading the Governor's words is: What data supports his claim that the Minutemen have made any difference at all? Over what time scale? If there is a drop in border crossings, couldn't overall increased border security after 9/11 have something to do with it?

Terrifyingly, the Minutemen are incorporating and starting to raise funds: In other words, we have a white supremacist nationalist organization on the rise, now working with the blessing of at least one large-state Governor.

What's next? "Citizen" passport checks on the streets of San Diego? Of LA? Of New York?
