Mischief for a good cause

Schwarzenegger's minions are out and about (e.g., at Target) gathering signatures for his ballot initiatives.

In response, California for Democracy started a grassroots effort to counter-petition wherever Arnold's henchmen are doing their dirty work.

The Governator retaliated by opening a hotline where his supporters are supposed to call if they observe CFD counter-petitioners.

Now this idea for a counterpunch: call their hotline and tell them that there are counter-petitioners everywhere, so that the hotline loses its credibility.

Originally from a posting at DefeatArnold:
Hi Everyone--

Here's a subversive and easy action that everyone can take: Chris Robson in Ventura announced yesterday that the governor's "Citizens to Save California" has set up a hotline to report Anti-Schwarzenegger activists who are "interfering" with the Special Election Signature Gatherering Minions.

The phone number is: 1-866-479-6767

Feel free to call this number over the next week and report fictitious venues. We can use up their resources on this effort and wear them down. Be sure to use legitimate sounding addresses--grocery stores, movie theaters, farmer's markets. Pace yourselves so we aren't immediately found out.

And I'm sure most of you know by now, the governor has backed down on his pension initiatives. Our work is paying off! Please keep up the pressure. Laura Schultz and I were just on the Save our State call with our coalition and the word from the legislature is that our side is holding strong and making headway. Yay!

There's a bit of logical difficulty with the idea, to be frank: First, the only place that it's credible for counter-petition activity to be taking place is where pro-Schwarzenegger petitioners are already present...which ought to be a place where counter-petitioners actually end up going. Second, there's probably no reason to assume that they aren't smart enough to do the same thing to CFD's efforts to find the pro-Schwarzenegger petitioners in the first place.

Nonetheless, I reckon that more ideas are better than fewer and that information wants to be free, and furthermore that more clever individuals than those of us at Marching Orders HQ can come up with ways to use the hotline number in effective ways that can't turn around and bite us in the ass. So: go nuts!
