Special election: The opposition is organizing

There's a great post at DEFEATARNOLD (Yahoo! Group; registration required) about organizing the opposition against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's ballot measures in the 2005 special election.

The author of the post is Anne Smith, the facilitator of DEFEATARNOLD.

Launching the special election campaign
Last Thursday night, I attended a large community meeting with representatives from local grassroots political groups, unions, community groups, the democratic party, the Utility Reform Network, Planned Parenthood, and many more. I wanted to give a synopsis of the meeting to get everyone started and to let those who are not in the L.A. Area know how to proceed.

First of all, I cannot emphasize enough how critical it is that everyone who is able to work on this campaign please do as much as you are able to do until November 8th. The only way we are going to win this is through a very powerful, far-reaching and personal ground campaign. The governor and his supporters have been raising millions of dollars to advertise their agenda and to get people out in favor of their initiatives, and we must speak to voters one on one to make them understand why his initiatives are bad. For example, Schwarzenegger plans to spend $40 million to defeat the good prescription drug bill, Prop 79, alone. Each one of their initiatives is going to get that kind of money poured into them.

She goes on to outline some of the talking points against each of the Governor's ballot measures, and to describe early tactics as we move through the summer.

I've excerpted here, but it's really a teaser to get you to sign up for the Yahoo! group and get the updates yourself. They generally only send one or two emails a week, and you can opt out of the notices altogether and read the group on the web instead.

Remember, it's July already, and the election is in November. That gives us only our months to get organized and start spreading the word.
