Why we need to fight Arnold...even if we think we can't winThe next Democrat who suggests that we can't beat
Arnold in a fair fight is getting a spanking. With a year and a half of lead
time, party solidarity and a national commitment to help stop the Governator in
his tracks, I know we can wallop
him.
But here's a reason to get on board even if you think we can't win: If he's stuck here fighting a hotly contested race, within the poll margins, he can't be gallavanting all over the USA helping other Republicans beat up on Democrats. I frankly think it's a long shot for Arnold
anyway: Kerry beat Bush by 1.2
million votes in 2004 in our proud state; that's 54.3% to 44.4%. I
don't think that 600,000 of those people are going to turn around when it comes
time to actually elect a governor by a plurality of votes (which, if you will
recall, is not what happened in the recall at all), especially not if they're
being reminded that Arnold's big contribution to 2004 was helping W win
Ohio.
But even if we Democrats manage to kick our own asses hard enough to turn what should be a landslide into a close race...even if your Spidey-sense tells you that neither Handsome Phil nor "Ribbons" Lockyer can possibly beat Schwarzenegger...then it still pays off to pin Arnold down. Keep him inside the points, with fundraising to match his, and he stays in California. Otherwise he's out there getting fellated by the media everywhere he goes, building his national profile, helping solidify the Red hold on Congress, and aiding challenges to Blue governors all over the map. So, I don't care if he is bigger than you. Suit up. Let's do this thing. Posted: Tue - February 8, 2005 at 10:05 AM | Category: | | | |
