Chalk one up for the good guys

Governor Schwarzenegger has abandoned his pension-privatization scheme, a major motivating issue behind Tuesday's protest.

(Thanks to Jeremy for the heads-up on this; I was sleeping one off this morning in Boston when the news came in, so apologies for the late-breaking coverage of this major story.)

Governor gives up on overhaul of public pensions
Police, firefighters had applied pressure
(Chron) Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unexpectedly dropped his plan to overhaul public pensions, succumbing Thursday to pressure from firefighters and police officers who had opposed the proposal that seemed headed for the ballot this year.

Schwarzenegger's reversal was a victory for his opponents, who believe sinking poll numbers and constant protests have damaged the governor's ability to move his agenda forward. They called on him to abandon any thoughts of a special election this November on issues ranging from teacher tenure to legislative redistricting.

This is a major policy reversal for the Governor, and his first significant public defeat. Pension overhaul had been more than an idle test balloon; it was a centerpiece of his "year of reform." Prospects for a special election (much less success in such a vote) seem dimmer for Schwarzenegger. (Can I get an "amen"?)

I think this development shows the power of organization and coalition-building among disparate groups (nurses, teachers, firefighters, cops, union laborers, activist Democrats), and provides a recipe for future success in opposing the Governor's agenda.

We're fighting the good fight, folks.
