Ze cost of doing business

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's special election, which has gone from a threat to near-reality, will cost $80 million (remember, that's according to the Republican Secretary of State, whom Arnold appointed).

That's a lot of money.

What else could we spend it on?

(Who knew that a crappy yellow school bus cost $70,000?)

Democrats in Assembly are calling for state reimbursement of election expenses, so that counties and municipalities don't get shafted than they already are. From the Assembly Democratic Caucus page:
Leaders of the Assembly Democratic Caucus are calling upon Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to detail his funding plans for a possible special election. The Democratic leaders have also announced their support for state reimbursement of the cost of a special election so that cities and counties who will have to pay for it are not forced to cut local services.

Republican Secretary of State Bruce McPherson has upped the cost of the Governor’s special election to $80 million. The cost of a special election was not included in the Governor’s recently-announced May Revision budget.

At first I felt like Democrats were enabling the Governor by offering state reimbursement, but I now realize (a) sometimes you just have to do the right think, and if Freddie Oakley can stand up defend counties against Arnold, then so can we; and (b) if the state pays for it, the cost will have to appear on the state's balance sheet rather than being relegated to the various counties and cities of California — so Arnold can't get away with making it look like it was free.
