"Civil war" inside the Schwarzenegger administration

I had imagined they'd be busy trying to track down the consultant who thought that blaming the Governor's poor English would be a good PR solution to offending every Mexican-American in California. But I was wrong.

Arnold's troops in Sacramento apparently have plenty of time to fight each other.

Nothing like a siege mentality to bring the worst out in people!

Schwarzenegger's Top Ally Steps In
(LA Times) Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is facing infighting among his senior staff and campaign team, which has contributed to a series of political missteps that threaten the once soaring governor's ambitious agenda, more than a dozen aides and lawmakers said Thursday.

One sign of the governor's troubles is the active involvement of his wife, Maria Shriver. The first lady is conferring with consultants to refine the governor's message and working to ensure that her husband hears a broader range of voices.

The problems are considered bad enough that they are expected to be discussed today as the governor's senior aides gather for a strategy meeting.

Schwarzenegger is reeling after successive policy reversals, gaffes and clashes with well-organized opponents have deflated his once-buoyant approval ratings. The latest setback came this week when he told a newspaper publishers association that the United States should "close its borders." He later apologized, explaining that he misspoke because of his imperfect command of English.

But a range of advisors see the remark as a sign of deeper strains. People with ties to the administration use words like "dysfunctional" and "civil war'' to describe the atmosphere within the warren of offices where Schwarzenegger and his top aides work.

Yes, that's Maria Shriver, his wife, who is bring brought in to "refine the governor's message." That's the same Maria Shriver who, a few weeks ago, told Oprah that she wanted her husband back home with the family — and then had to publicly backpedal, claiming that she'd been speaking about a potential Presidential bid and not about his prospects of running for a second term as Governor.

As I've said before -- it's so important to avoid being complacent about this, to keep in mind that Arnold's reversal was very quick and that a change in the wind can come just as quickly again. We need to keep the pressure on and not get lazy.

But by all accounts, we're doing that, so I think that a little well-earned schadenfreude is in order.
