Abortion measure will qualify for special election ballot

A ballot initiative that would require abortion providers to notify the parents of unmarried minor patients has probably collected enough signatures to appear on the fall ballot.

Sponsors: Initiative will qualify for state election
(San Diego Union-Tribune) Amid the escalating hostilities over Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's political agenda, a little-noticed but highly emotional measure has been quietly gathering momentum and will probably be the first to qualify for the next statewide ballot.

The initiative would require an abortion provider to notify a parent or guardian 48 hours before performing an abortion on an unmarried minor, unless there is a medical emergency.

See my earlier story on this subject for analysis of the impact that this ballot measure might have on turnout in the fall.
