Unrestricted by spending limits, Schwarzenegger's ballot campaign steams forwardAs we reported earlier this week, the organization
raising money for Arnold's ballot initiative campaigns is no longer subject to
restrictions, regardless of whether the Governor controls it
directly.
So now (no surprise) the Governor is taking it over and controlling it directly. Governor's team taking ballot
reins
'They're going to face everything we've got,' Schwarzenegger aide warns Democrats (Bee) Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's political team is moving to take over his special election campaign after last week's court ruling that allows politicians to raise unlimited money for ballot measure efforts at the same time they fully control them.... Read the article itself for some good old-fashioned Republican gloating and strutting. The upshot of this (the substance, not the strutting) is even more dire than the fact that Schwarzenegger gets to raise all the money he wants. Additionally, the Governor will be able to coordinate his own travel schedule and campaigning directly with work for his ballot initiatives, without having to conceal those efforts behind a smokescreen -- before, the ballot-initiative fundraising and campaigning was being performed largely by a front group called Citizens to Save California, which was "independent" from the Governor, wink wink. The monetary value of this ability to coordinate his efforts on the ballot measures — that is, how much more we'll have to raise to counter Schwarzenegger, on top of the amount we have to raise just to break even now that he can raise as much as he wants — is inestimable, but certainly large. Hm. Maybe someone should start raising money against the ballot measures... More on this later, probably next week. Posted: Wed - March 30, 2005 at 01:11 PM | Category: | | | |
