New blood: New York, New York

I want to be a part of it...

Thanks to the enthusiasm of Max (aka mgh, his recently minted DKos handle), Marching Orders is going to start covering the New York mayoral race, in a new category created specifically for this purpose.

Max, an old friend and colleague, will be guest blogging from the Big Apple, where he'll be reporting on events, filtering the news, and generally serving as our man on the 4-5-6 line.

In addition to the mayor's race coverage, Max will bring a few things to Marching Orders that may have been lacking — but I wouldn't make too much of that. It's not as though logic, thoughtfulness, foresight or a command of written English have ever been considered assets in the blogosphere.

Seriously, though: Max is a careful thinker and a cogent writer, and I'm really looking forward to hearing what he has to say. And so are you.

I think there's a nice symmetry to covering the NYC mayor's race at the same time that we're following the California gubernatorial race. Both the Governor of California and the Mayor of New York are, in some sense, national positions, with influence far beyond the legal authority of their offices. For better or worse, Schwarzenegger is a national figure in the GOP, and his work in California is serving as a lab for their strategy in the rest of the country. Similarly, (and similarly, for better or worse), in the days following 9/11, Giuliani was Mayor, not just of New York City, but of the whole country.

So...

For the New Yorkers who are joining us: Welcome!

For the Californians who are sticking with us: Thank you both!

OK, let's get this party started...
