Instead of our usual happy hour this week we'll be checking out the
kick-off event for the Sweat Free Ordinance that will go before the
San Francisco Board of Supervisors this month. See the below
announcement for more information.
Also, Drinking Liberally will begin meeting on Tuesdays next week
instead of Thursdays. Same time and place as usual, Doc's Clock at
7PM.

San Francisco
Speakers:
Robert Ross, author of Slaves to Fashion
Chie Abad, former sweatshop worker
with special guest performances
DON’T LET YOUR CITY’S TAX DOLLARS GO TO SWEATSHOPS!
Support the sweat free government procurement legislation that will
come for a vote before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in March. This
law will prevent the city from purchasing goods produced in sweatshops,
and help improve wages and working conditions for workers around the world.
Robert Ross is Professor of Sociology, Faculty Director, and Director
of the International Studies Stream at Clark University. He is a leading
scholar on sweatshop conditions in the American apparel industry and its
relations to sweatshop conditions around the world. His latest work is Slaves
to Fashion: poverty and abuse in the new sweatshops .
Carmencita "Chie" Abad spent six years as a garment worker on the
Pacific island of Saipan, a U.S. territory. She endured wretched conditions,
frequently working 14-hour shifts in order to meet arbitrary
production quotas for her employer. Chie was instrumental in forcing 26 major
retailers to settle a lawsuit in September 2002 to improve conditions
in Saipan.
