Outrage of the day

(Via Feministe, on whose blog my blog has a crush.)

(Lauren recommends some accompanying reading at Orcinus).

I'm a hybrid myself: Dad was an immigrant from India, and later an American citizen. Mom was from another Third World country: Kentucky. I'm therefore part of the problem — and, presumably, a target of whatever final solution the author of the screed above might have in "mind".

I go through most days successfully not thinking about the fact that there are still people like this in the US, but it's getting harder.

In the country at large, 44% of Americans think it's a good idea to place some form of restriction on Muslims' civil rights. That isn't just "other people" for my family -- it's my new sister-in-law.

In California, our own "moderate Republican" Governor is scoring points with the right by targeting the most helpless Californians -- immigrant-baiting and loudly proclaiming that we should close the borders.

And I'm relatively certain that even among my own group of liberal friends, there are some people whose first reaction to the above would be a moment of heart-in-the-throat panic about the dwindling number of white babies, before their better judgment got hold of them.

Thanks, Lauren, for reminding me.
