I'm back......from mountain-climbing and tent-sleeping and
campfire-sitting up in Mineral King, part of the Sequoia National
Park.
I don't get out into nature much, so it was an
eye-opening experience as well as a wonderful one, and it gave me a visceral
understanding of how important it is to conserve our wild land — as well
as a clear view of how fragile the land is. I'm certainly pro-environment but
I'm ordinarily not much of an "environmentalist" (my liberalism comes from a
civil liberties and social justice direction); nonetheless, proximity to nature
encouraged me to think less of worldly matters and more of planetary
ones...
...until this observation brought me back down to earth: Why does everyone up there seem to be a yellow-ribbon-flaunting, SUV-driving, flag-waving, Bible-thumping (presumable) Republican? Don't they know what the GOP is doing to the parks system and the environment in general? More about this as I re-integrate myself into urban, wired society.
