George Lakoff on NPRKQED morning host Michael Krasny interviewed
linguist George Lakoff on Forum Monday morning. I just took in a half-hour of
the show in its evening rebroadcast as I drove home.
It's amazingly good stuff, focused largely on the
difference between conservative and liberal mindsets as reflected in (and
influenced by) their use of language. I've been thinking a lot about this
recently, in the context of strategies by which we might more effectively make
our case with voters who time and again choose to support Republicans against
all objective self-interest.
You can listen to the audio archive of the show on the Forum podcast (don't worry if you occasionally run across a broken link — the KQED webmaster is on jury duty this week, and they're having some weird technical issues). Lakoff has a couple of books out that I intend to buy: I thought that Lakoff made incredibly good sense. It's a great interview; definitely give it a listen if you have any spare time at all.
