A long damn time in a long black robe

The Senate showdown on judicial filibusters (a while back) and the upcoming retirement of Sandra Day O'Connor has got me thinking about the lifetime appointments of Supreme Court justices and high-court judges throughout the land. And I have a question.

Is there any reason why it's important that the appointments be for life, as opposed to a very long but fixed period of time?

Iraq war leaks: The hits keep on coming

Recently, I've posted a few articles regarding the revelations described in the Downing Street Memos, documents that were released by an anonymous source in the British government. The upshot of the DSMs, written in July of 2002 is that the US and UK governments were doctoring intelligence months before the war started.

This recent news (this time, about revelations from a source in the American military) suggests that's false:

By July of 2002 the war had started already. In secret.

George Lakoff on NPR

KQED morning host Michael Krasny interviewed linguist George Lakoff on Forum Monday morning. I just took in a half-hour of the show in its evening rebroadcast as I drove home.

Index Librorum Prohibitorum: Wingnut edition

I sometimes wonder what right-wing extremists do for fun when they're not suppressing gay rights, opposing the teaching of evolution, eroding the separation of church and state, or lying to the public about the justification for expensive wars.

Book meme

For those of you who don't read blogs all day: the "book meme" is essentially a blog chain letter, propagated around the blogosphere. I usually detest chain letters, but this one is fun.

I was tagged by Shari at An Old Soul. From her answer, I learned that we both read cookbooks for fun. I will sometimes stretch a bowl of Cheerios for fifteen minutes as I moon over the pictures in The French Laundry Cookbook.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

QOTD

As a man who wants to get married someday, I can't say I strictly agree with Barney Frank. Still, you've got to love the guy for saying this out loud.

In saecula saeculorum

There's a vibrant discussion of the role of religion over at Shakespeare's Sister, initiated by two of Shakey Sis's as-always-thought-provoking QoTDs:
Question 1: Religious libs, how do you square your own tolerance and egalitarianism with some of the more intolerant and decidedly illiberal teachings of the religion to which you subscribe?

Question 2: Secular libs, what’s your main problem with religious liberals?

You know you have an opinion, so wade into the comments over there.

Or read on and hear my two cents...

He who reads these words of wit...

This may be taking the concept of attribution a bit too far, but here goes:

I read something interesting on the wall of a public restroom yesterday afternoon.

[Insert sailor joke here]

The UK has begun actively recruiting gays into the Navy.

Now, if the gay-baiting right in the US is correct, it's just a matter of time before all their ships sink, right?

And when they don't, the gay-baiting right will abandon its objection to gays in the military...right?

We will always be at war against Eastasia

"In accordance with the principles of doublethink it does not matter if the war is not real. For when it is, victory is not possible. The war is not meant to be won, but it is meant to be continuous."

"Faith is the Shibboleth"

In the aftermath of the moral values "landslide" (a wartime president scraping together a re-election with a margin of 1 in 40 voters), liberals increasingly refer to the strength of their faith to justify themselves.

The implication being, I suppose, that people without religious faith are not justified.
